Copper sulfate is a compound made up of copper, sulfur, and oxygen. While copper can react with acids, it will not form copper sulfate as a product. This is because copper sulfate requires the presence of both sulfur and oxygen in addition to copper, which are not provided by the reaction of copper with an acid. To understand why this is the case, it is important to look at the structure of copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is made up of copper ions (Cu2+) and sulfate ions (SO42-), which are formed through a reaction between copper oxide or copper carbonate and sulfuric acid. In this reaction, the sulfate ions (SO42-) from the acid combine with copper ions (Cu2+) to form copper sulfate (CuSO4). On the other hand, when copper reacts with an acid, such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), the product formed is copper chloride (CuCl2) and hydrogen gas (H2). This reaction occurs because chloride ions (Cl-) from the acid combine with copper ions (Cu2+) to form copper chloride (CuCl2), while hydrogen ions (H+) from the acid combine with each other to form hydrogen gas (H2). Therefore, it is not possible to make copper sulfate by reacting copper with an acid alone, as sulfur and oxygen are needed for the formation of this compound.
