Keyboard macros are short pieces of text (usually no more than 6) which can be executed by pressing a single key combination.
Depending on the specific keyboard you're using, the number of possible macros can vary. For example, when a Windows computer is in use, there's the standard Windows keyboard which has a total of 16,777,216 different key combinations. On a Mac, you have a standard keyboard which contains only one of these combinations: F3.
Keyboard macros can be used to automate tedious tasks in a quicker way.
Keyboard macros are stored in a special file, called a.kmc file. The.kmc extension is followed by a file name, a space, and then the.kmc extension again.
When you want to set a keyboard macro, go to Tools -> Options -> Keyboard. The Path to the file field contains a path to the.kmc file.
Macro commands are separated by a semicolon (;) character, with the macro name being the first word and the command that is to be executed after it.
With the macro settings open, click on the New button in the upper right corner. Fill out the details of your new macro in the empty edit field. The command that is to be executed is between the parenthesis ( ) and the final semicolon (;).
If the macro consists of more than one command, this must be separated by semicolons. The standard (Unix) format for typing in a command is:
command1;command2;command3;command4
and the order of the commands must be preserved.
When you're finished, click the Save button to record your macro and exit the keyboard macro editor.
This can be very handy when your computer is in use and you're doing something else, for example watching a movie.
NOTE: If you want to delete your keyboard macros, use the Add command. Otherwise, the command will simply perform the same as adding the macro.
You can manually add keyboard macros. Click on the Edit button on the keyboard macro editor. Now, just add the command to the end of the previously defined macros.
In order to use the macro, press the Alt + the first letter of the macro name, then press the required command and release it.
